赤ん坊は、どんな世界に産まれてもよいように、万能の感性を備えている。
たとえばまだ言葉を知らない時期の赤ん坊は絶対音感を持っていて、あらゆる音韻を繊細に弁別する。けれども母語に曝され母語を獲得してゆく過程で、日常聴き分けることを必要とされない差異に関しては弁別力を失ってゆく。日本人が一般に、英語におけるｌとｒの聴き分けが不得手である所以だ。
「看護婦と岸辺馳けだす彼の肺」
聴覚だけではなく、赤ん坊は視覚的な差異にも鋭敏で、驚くべきことに猿や馬の個体識別ができる。それが長ずれば、見慣れぬ外国人の顔はみなおなじに見えてしまうくらい鈍感になってしまう。
「栃木にいろいろ雨のたましいもいたり」
思考についても同様、子どもが大人のように効率的に考えることができないのは、なにを考えるべきかを知らないからではない。考えなくてよいことはなにかを知らないからだ。考えるべきことに比して、考えなくてもよいことは無限にある。あらゆる選択肢について、考慮に入れるべきか否かをいちいち判断していたら、考えはいつまでたっても先に進まない。考えなくともよいことは、却下する必要もなく、あらかじめ思考の視野にあらわれることさえなくなって初めて、考えは進むようになる。
人が成熟するのは、獲得することによってではない。失うことによるのである。
「かなかなのころされにゆくものがたり」
このような営為がきっと、感情においても営まれているはずだ。感情は過程を省略した判断である。事態に即応して、世界の色合いをがらりと変える。さすれば、とある感情に相応しい事態がほとんど、あるいはまったく起こらない世界に産まれれば、その感情はやがて淘汰されてゆくだろう。
「るんるんと胎児つらぬく砲あって」
おさない頃、ちいさな心を鷲掴みにして翻弄した、名も無き感情の記憶を残している人は少なくないと思う。それはある特定の場所や状況に結びついていたりいなかったり。
どこかで一度だけ聴いてなぜか、耳に残った数小節のメロディを、反芻するごとに昂まる心地よい不安。
知らない場所で目覚めたときすでに、心の中で静かに待っていた悟り。
みっつの坂が交わるＹ字路を曲がる、バスの車窓を滑る景色のめくるめく肌触り。
保育園の裏手の足洗い場のうすら寒いにおいを夕刻に嗅いだときだけ訪れる懐かしさは、人生の長さよりも明らかに過去に遡っていた。
「静かなうしろ紙の木紙の木の林」
なにを知らせ、なにをさせようとしているか判然としない、しかし鮮烈な感情の数々。子ども心を熱し刺し濡らし引き延ばし、高々と持ち上げてそのあとふいに投擲したあの感情の数々は、もはや訪れることはない。
「犬がみて穴のようなる窓に白菊」
言語を獲得し大人になってゆくごとに消えていった感情たち。子ども、それはだんだんと書物がなくなってゆく図書館の司書。
「鳥がきて大きな涙木につるす」
筋道立って考えることの筋道とはまさしく、都市化された心の街路のようなものだ。郊外にあってさえ私たちは、道を外れた方角があることさえ気づかずただ進行方向を見つめている。
阿部完市の俳句は、そんな私達の頭をそっとつまんで横に向けてくれる霞のような大きな手だ。言葉の外へ、むしろ言葉の持つ慣性を利用して、私たちを逸らす。遠くに、久しく訪れたことのない感情が見える。雪原の地平線で、こちらを振り返ったけもののシルエットのように。
「あのころのむこうの方を狩りにゆく」
