著者は「多世界解釈」の代表的論客。日常的常識とは相容れない量子論的世界観を素直に穏当に解釈することによって、じわりじわりと常識を解体し、中盤にしてすでに無限と永遠を一望する驚愕の世界像に到達する。とにかくスケールのでかさは他の追随を許さない。小松左京『果しなき流れの果に』のノンフィクション版と言いたくなる風格。アイディアを徹底的に追い詰めていく手妻はグレッグ・イーガンを思わせ、随所で彼の作品を想起させるのでイーガン副読本としても入ってゆけます。
地道に基本から語り起こしてくれるので、前半は量子論、あるいは科学哲学的思考の入門編としてもおすすめ。
これが古典となり得るかどうかは未知数で、ＳＦのように腐ってしまうかもしれない。けれども、よしんば多世界解釈が時代の仇花として埋もれてしまったとしても、この本の、世界を万華鏡のようにきらきらと回す、めくるめく視野の力は失われることがないと思う。再読、三読に堪える好著。

（角川のポピュラーサイエンス系では異例のロングセラーですから、いまさら紹介するまでもないかもしれませんが、たとえ100万部売れた本だって100人に１人も読んでないわけだし、この本なんか1000人に１人も読んでないと思うので）

脳は辻褄を合わせるためならどこまで現実を改変し、意識や判断を操作してしまうのか、ということが学べます。「脳よ、そこまでするか！」と言いたくなります。足元が揺らぎます。フィリップ・Ｋ・ディックな気分です。
次々と紹介される奇妙な症例は知的刺激度抜群。ラマチャンドランはいわゆる「実験勘」のある学者で、症状の謎を解明するために、あるいは症状を改善するために彼が繰り出してくるアイディアの卓抜さはまさに快刀乱麻。ミステリの名探偵なみの切れ味です。「おおおおお」読んでいて何度も唸り声が出る。頭いい。かっこいい。無類のおもしろさとは、この本のことかよ。
（刊行当時宮部みゆきさんが、「あまりにネタの宝庫なので内緒にしておこうと思ったら、知り合いの本好きが次から次へと『読んだ？』『読んだ？』『あれ読んだ？』と訊いてくるので、隠しておくのは諦めました。ええい！本年度ベスト１だ！」みたいに言ってました。薦め上手ですねえ）

続刊として『脳の中の幽霊ふたたび』があります。講演録なのでこっちのほうがとっつきはいい。直接の続編ではないので、邦題は無視してこっちから読んでも問題なし。なお巻末の原注にもセンスオブワンダーに満ちたエピソードが潜伏していますので、お見逃しなく。

先入見なしで物を見たいとは、誰しもが思うことだろう。たとえば生まれたばかりの赤ん坊が喋れたら、次々出会う新奇な経験をどんなふうに報告するんだろう？ なにに驚き、なにに戸惑うんだろう？ そんなことを考えたことのある人は多いと思う。

本書の筆者は交通事故によって記憶喪失に陥るのだが、これはかなり特異な症例だと思われる。なにしろ、自分がどこの何者か？ というエピソード記憶だけでなく、人間であるとはどういうことかという基本的な知識も失ってしまっている。男と女の意味もわからない。親って何で、子どもって何かも知らない。食べ物というものがあり、それを食べないと死ぬということさえ忘れている。甘い、辛いという語彙だけでなくその概念まで喪失している。ところが、言語の骨格だけはしっかり残っており、語彙を学びながら家族や医師や友人らと対話をしてゆくことができ、自分の想いを伝えることができるのだ。

赤ん坊そのものではないにしても、ほとんど白紙に近い状態で世界に出会ってゆく精神の報告。類書はちょっと思い当たらない。貴重な文献です。
いったいなにに感動しているのか不分明な描写を読み進むうちに、「あっ、あれか！」と気付く。うわー、こういうふうに感じるわけねー、と眼からウロコ落ちまくり本。
