_ 比較的マイナーであるがすばらしい本を、地道に売っているとしばしば、最後の一冊まで売り切ってしまう、ということが起こる。
「売れたー！」喜んで追加発注しようとしたとき、品切だったり絶版だったりしたときのショックは、常に心の準備をしていても大きい。
うちの店に在庫はあっても、版元ではすでに品切という本もざらにある。そのうちいくつかはおそらく、新刊書店で買える日本最後の一冊である（御客様のなかには、自分の持ち物でないものは大事に扱うという習慣がない人もいて、そういう一冊の帯が千切れていたりカバーがずれたまま棚に捩じ込まれてひしゃげていたりすると、一瞬で胃炎になりそうになる）。
この種の本は各担当者に「これだけは返品しないでね」と頼んでおくのだが、きりがないのでぜんぶを憶え込んでもらうことはできず、たまに返品されてしまう。そういうとき往々にして、版元の在庫表示は「品切」から「在庫あり」に復帰したりせず、闇から闇に葬られてしまう。無念である。
22日にフェアのラインナップの一部として挙げた本の中にもそういう稀少な本があって、気が付く方なら「あれをまだ持ってるのか」と思われたかもしれない。それがどれかを明言すると、僭越な言い方になるが、その本とあまり御縁のない方が「とりあえず」買ってしまうのではないかというおそれを感じるので内緒だ。
今回のフェアで品切まで売り切ってしまった本も、すでに何点かある。うれしいようなかなしいような。

品切になってしまった本を、営業さんにしつこくしつこく「刷って刷って刷って、がんばって売るから刷って」と涙目でお願いしているとたまに刷ってくれる奇特な、というか血迷った版元さんもあるが、そういう御恩は忘れていません。まことに微力ながら末永く応援させていただきます。まことに微力なんだけどね。
