ロデリック・タウンリー『記憶の国の王女』は、１冊で千冊ぶんの本だ。
この本を読んだ後に出会う物語をぜんぶ、少しだけすてきにしてくれる魔法がかかる。
うちの店でずっと平積にしているのだが、ほとんど売れない。でもこの本はじぶんで、出会うべき人を呼んでいると思うので、ＰＯＰを付けたりして「力を入れて」売る気になれない。手に取って、最初の数ページを読んで、棚に戻せる人には用のない本である。

メタフィクション、物語についての物語、枠物語の類はたくさんあるけれど、本の中に棲む者の生態をこれほど生彩をもって描き出した本を、他に知らない。あざとく宣伝文句を謳ってみるなら「ファンタアジェンとは地続きでない国の、もうひとつの『はてしない物語』」。
物語の登場人物にさえ人権を認めかねない二階堂奥歯なら、きっとこの本を愛しただろうと思う。それはもはやさだかではないのだけれど、この本としては、二階堂奥歯に読まれたかったはずだ。さぞや読まれたかっただろう。読ませてあげたかった。
二階堂奥歯を思い出すとき、ぼくは後悔をすることはほとんどない。いつか来る危機を回避する努力のために、ぼくには十年に及ぼうとする時間が与えられていたのだから。それを幸運と呼ばないわけにはいかないだろう。
けれど2004年の秋に、初めてこの本を手に取り読み始めたときには思わず、奥付の刊行年月日をたしかめた。2002年12月31日。「ああ、間に合っていたのに」と思った。

ぼくの部屋の本棚にいる『記憶の国の王女』は今日も、心ここにあらずなぼーっとした目で、天井ごしに空のほうを眺めている。
なにか飛んでいるものを、さがしているのかもしれない。
こちらを拝見するようになったのは、おそらく今年の二月頃、ウェブ日記の書籍化がすすんでいるという出版社のお報せを偶然目にしたからでした。その後も折にふれておとずれていましたが「記憶の国の少女」を読んでから、何度かコメントさせていただこうかと思いながらそのままになってしまっていました。<br><br>なぜか「記憶」つながりのようですが、このたび（もう12月ですが）「ザ・ギバー＜記憶を伝える者＞」を図書館で借りて読みました。わけもなくこのふたつの本に出逢えたことに<br>お礼を申し上げておきたく、あしあとを残させていただくことにしました。<br>どちらも読後感がとてもよかったのです。おとなになったはずのわたしなのに、平積みにされ話題になっている小説などよりもむしろ心に響くのは、いわゆるYA向けの良書といわれるものなのかもしれません。なお、映像化されるとしたら案外うまく出来上がる可能性もあるかもしれないと思いますが<br>こころでイメージを描く豊かさには変えられないものもあるので、複雑な心境になるのもごもっともかもしれないと思います。初めてのコメントで長々と失礼致しました。(直近の記事へのコメントでなく申し訳ありません）
