『ひとりの男』（講談社）の著者だ。当時の表記はオリアーナ・ファラーチだった。

十数年前、いろいろなジャンルのオールタイムベストを選ぶブックガイドブックで、「地上最強の恋愛小説」とあったので注文して購入した。それを見かけて同僚のＩが、「あっ、俺も注文しなくちゃ」と言った(デイヴィッド・ロッジと幸田露伴を愛する男だった)。以前『ひとリの男』を読んで、いたく気に入ったものの、まだ本は持っていなかったらしい。Ｉは、ぼくの出会った本読みの中でも、「切れる」と形容したくなる破格の目利きであったから、ますます期待は高まった。ぱらぱらっと目を通したとき、そんじょそこらにある代物ではないということはすぐ分かった。腰を据えて読まなければならない。
ところが後日、Ｉには「品切重版予定なし」の返事が来たのである。「頼む！ 譲ってくれ」と言う。申し訳ないが断る。だってすごそうなんだもの。「二倍出す」と言う。当時で税込3000円の本だ。そんなに言われるとますます譲れないではないか。「一万円でどうだ」まで吊り上がったが断った。運命だと思って、がんばって古書をあたってくれ（でもこれを買うような人は、おいそれとは売却しないだろうなあ）。

ところであれから十数年、『ひとりの男』をまだ読んでいない。腰が据らなかったのだ。
地上最強の恋愛小説はいまだ伝説のベールに包まれている。
転職したＩはどうしているだろう。
そろそろ読む頃合か。
